The President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili presented a report at the “Privacy Symposium” in Venice


From 10 to 14 June, the annual international event, the “Privacy Symposium 2024”, took place in Venice. During the event, the President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili, delivered reports at two panel sessions of the conference: “International Cooperation on Data Protection, Policy and for Compliance Research” and “Extending Cooperation between European Personal Data Protection Supervisory Authorities outside the EU”. In the scope of the panel sessions, the importance of sharing the best European practices, close cooperation formats of Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia with the “European Data Protection Board”, the “European Data Protection Supervisor”, the “Personal Data Protection Division of the Council of Europe”, and international activities, carried out together with the European Data Protection Authorities were highlighted.

In the panel session: “International Cooperation for Data Protection, Policy and Compliance Research”, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili spoke about the experience of the Personal Data Protection Service in developing relevant recommendations for the new legislative arrangement and publishing scientific studies in the field of personal data protection law. Additionally, in order to conduct a scientific discussion on the topic of personal data protection law, the President introduced the “Journal of Personal Data Protection Law”, a Georgian-English language scientific periodical publication with an international editorial board founded by the Service.

In the session “Expansion of Cooperation between European Personal Data Protection Supervisory Authorities beyond the Borders of the European Union,” Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili discussed the Service’s international relations. The President highlighted existing formats of mutual cooperation with European data protection supervisory authorities and international events organized by the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia. “Next year is special for the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia to the extent that we will host the “European Conference of Data Protection Authorities” in Batumi and also, with the co-organization of our Service, the 75th working meeting of the International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunication (Berlin Group) will be held in Tbilisi. It is a great honor for us to host the most important international platforms in the field of personal data protection. On behalf of the Service, we once again confirm our readiness to expand international cooperation, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili noted in the report presented.

At the end of the panel sessions, a discussion was held on the role of personal data protection supervisory authorities, as well as on the action strategy of their activities in order to enhance data protection guarantees.

“Privacy Symposium” aims to foster international dialogue and cooperation in the field of data protection, compliance with international legal regulations, and innovative technologies. Each year, leading experts in personal data protection and privacy participate in the event to share their experiences. The symposium serves as a platform to discuss challenges, modern approaches, and trends in the field of data protection and privacy, aiming to establish an international community of professionals dedicated to effective data protection.
