On May 12–16, 2024, the annual international event, the Privacy Symposium, was held in Venice. As part of the symposium, the President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili, delivered a report during a panel session titled: “Enhancement of International Cooperation among European Data Protection Supervisory Authorities of Non-EU Member States.”
During the panel session, Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili reviewed the 33rd European Conference of Data Protection Authorities, the discussion topics on the conference agenda and shared information with her colleagues regarding the resolution adopted to promote international cooperation. In her report, she also mentioned that the next publication of the bilingual, peer-reviewed academic journal - “Journal of Personal Data Protection Law”, published by the Service - will be dedicated to the 33rd European Conference. Participants of the event, including panel speakers and moderators, will have the opportunity to publish their scientific papers in this edition.
“It was a great honor for the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia to host the 33rd European Conference of Data Protection Authorities (commonly known as the 'Spring Conference') in Batumi. In light of current developments in personal data protection and privacy, the conference addressed a range of crucial topics, including: the interplay between national data protection legislation, the EU AI Act, and the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on AI; the challenges of protecting minors' personal data in an AI-driven world; the impact of technological advancement on health-related data protection; the role and evolving responsibilities of data protection officers; strategies for small supervisory authorities handling large-scale cases; and the importance of international cooperation as a mechanism for sharing best practices. By engaging in these discussions, I am confident that we are collectively strengthening European standards in personal data protection and fostering closer collaboration,”

In addition to the above, Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili shared information with symposium participants about the Service’s action plan and strategy, including goals to enhancing international relations. She also announced that in July of this year, the Service will host another international event in Tbilisi - the 75th meeting of the International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications, also known as the “Berlin Group.”
At the conclusion of the panel session, a discussion was held on cooperation opportunities between personal data protection supervisory authorities and the development of action strategies to ensure stronger data protection guarantees.
