From September 15 to 19, 2025, the 47th Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) conference was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The conference was attended by Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili, President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, Otar Chakhunashvili, First Deputy Head of the Service, and Nikoloz Popiashvili, Head of President’s Cabinet of the Service.
During the conference, important issues related to the emerging growth of artificial intelligence were discussed, including the legal framework for international data transfers, the protection of minors’ data, as well as modern approaches and best practices to ensure adequate safeguards for privacy protection. The event emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation among data protection supervisory authorities. Additionally, participants discussed matters related to the accreditation of new members.
At the 47th Assembly event, participants were also presented with annual reports from GPA working groups, where the President of the Service, as co-chair of one of the Assembly’s working groups - the “Data Protection Metrics Working Group,” spoke about the activities and strategic plans implemented by the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia.
In parallel with the event, the President of the Service, the First Deputy Head, and the Head of President’s Cabinet held working meetings with the Assembly Secretariat, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), and representatives of the United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The parties discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the field of personal data protection and initiatives to share best practices.
By decision of the Assembly members, through a secret ballot, Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili, President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, has been elected as a member of the Executive Committee. Candidates in the elections included data protection supervisory authorities from Brazil and Canada. The selection process for new committee members involved candidates submitting motivational statements and presenting their vision for the Assembly’s strategic development. The Executive Committee will continue working on the Assembly’s future development vision and the implementation of strategic tasks for the coming years with the new composition starting next year.
Additionally, it is important to highlight that the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia became a member, for the second time, of the Evaluation Committee for the Best Initiatives in Privacy and Human Rights established under the GPA. This mechanism aims to identify outstanding initiatives in the field of privacy and human rights at the international and national levels. Committee members, including representative of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, will evaluate the initiatives shared by participants, based on which awards will be granted to the winners.
In parallel with the 47th Assembly event, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia and the National Data Protection Authority of Brazil at the Embassy of Georgia in the Republic of Korea, which outlines new opportunities and activities for sharing best practices between the agencies.
As a reminder, the Global Privacy Assembly is a leading international forum in the field of privacy and personal data protection. It unites more than 130 member supervisory authorities worldwide operating in this field. The goal of the GPA is to promote cooperation and share experiences among various data protection authorities.
